The Woof Guide: A Dog-less Doggy Afternoon in London

Brumus-Bar-Dogs.jpg

We make no secret of loving cake (and you know we love dogs) so when deciding how to best enjoy a free Saturday, afternoon tea sprang to mind. Already regulars at the Covent Garden Hotel, we decided to try another one of Firmdale’s other hotels, and when we found out that the Brumus Bar and Restaurant at The Haymarket Hotel had a dog influence our decision was made.

The hotel's restaurant is named after the owner’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and has been decorated in his honour. All the restaurant’s chairs bear silhouettes of Poodles, Dachshunds, British Bulldogs, Whippets and Westies but just one is Brumus. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to locate the aforementioned chair, as he was hidden under another diner’s coat so we'll have to go back to find him - such a hardship!

Brumus’ influence is just one of the perks of the afternoon tea experience – the food and drink is of course the other. The Summer Tea includes a delicious mini chicken pie, an unlimited supply of finger sandwiches, a wide selection of sweet treats including a wonderfully moist lemon drizzle cake, vanilla pannacotta and scones served with clotted cream and jams plus an extensive list of tea and coffee. Every mouthful is a joy, the staff are extremely friendly and attentive, and the backdrop is glamorous and stylish – it’s a dog meets cake meet tea lover’s dream. Summer Tea at Brumus Bar and Restaurant is served all day long until 4.30pm and priced £25 or £32.50 with champagne. For the full menu and to book visit Firmdale.com.

If taking tea Monday to Friday, why not also arrange to visit The Kennel Club’s HQ where you can enjoy a hour or two in their art gallery. A short walk from The Haymarket, the gallery boasts the largest collection of dog paintings in Europe and is also currently showing ‘Black & White: The Scottish Terrier and West Highland White Terrier in Art’. On display until 16th November, their latest exhibition features a collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures and ephemera all depicting these wonderful breeds and their history. The Kennel Club Art Gallery is open 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, by appointment only.
