Pet Cushions That’ll Make You Proud

Basil is no stranger to being immortalised into merchandise. He’s been illustrated into fabric for your interiors, is part of Marlene’s Gang as a Sugar Skull squad members and is a print muse for the wonderfully talented Ros Shiers, so when the op came up for him to be given the Helen Penny treatment I leapt at the chance.

In case you’ve not come across Helen and her designs yet, she’s an illustrator creating art that celebrates the influence pets have on our lives. The end result is on the cool side of modern kitsch and her business is inspired by Wilma – an adopted Pug, who really is the sweetest.

Helen offers a choice of products in her online shop including prints, patch badges, ready to go tiger and leopard velvet cushions (WANT!), as well as custom prints and pillows of your pet. It's the latter that I was offered to have Basil fashioned into. What sets Helen’s designs apart from other custom pet cushions or off the shelf styles of your favourite breed is that they are shaped to match the outline of your pet for a lifelike look.

To get Basil’s commission into process, I had to collate a selection of my favourite pictures for Helen to then edit together to create her illustration. I was then sent a proof to feedback and with only the teeniest of tweaks, Basil’s illustration was then digitally printed Basil onto a soft velvet fabric (which feels as lovely to stroke as Basil), hand cut then sewn onto cotton drill fabric before stuffing until it was as cuddly as the dog himself. The end result is tremendous and it’s ridiculously lifelike causing me at least double takes for the real thing. For a pet commission like ours, it’s £125 and you need to allow 4 to 6 weeks for your cushion to arrive. Should you want a second cushion for elsewhere in your home or to gift a friend or family member, they’re £60 each.

As a new and emerging business, Helen wanted more pets in her portfolio to show off her work hence his Lordship being invited to take part in the photo-shoot. Shot by Barkarama’s #1 pet photographer home girl Rachel Oates, we enjoyed a fun afternoon at her home studio in East London getting to meet Helen and Wilma, as well as hanging with Basil’s buddies insta-famous Winston The Corgi and Growlees/Growlmama Frida The Grenchie. See what we got up to in the video link below.

I hope you adore the pictures and cushions as much as I do, and explore and shop at Helenpenny.co.uk
