Breed Focus: Boston Terrier

Inspired by our recent visit to Crufts and their Discover Dogs zone, we've decided to bring you a new feature, Breed Focus, which spotlights a different dog breed each month. While we were dazzled by the Crufts Best in Show winner the Basset Griffon Vendeen, it seemed only fair that the Boston Terrier was the star of our first breed focus given that we spend every day with one.

Affectionately known as the American Gentleman on account of their tuxedo-like markings, dapper appearance, characteristically gentle disposition and suitability as companion and house pet, this small and compact bundle of fun will melt your heart with his bug eyes and squishy little face. The breed is a result of a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier, which is a little ironic seeing how he originated from Boston.

This happy-go-lucky chappy requires a moderate amount of exercise, minimum amount of grooming, are easy to train (our pup Basil still has some way to go in this department), eager to please and aren’t massive barkers. Their less impressive traits include flatulence (Basil excels at this), loud snoring and bouts of being stubborn as a mule but bring one of these dogs into your home and you will learn to love and laugh at these little quirks. On a more serious note, Bostons are prone to eye problems such as juvenile cataracts so ensure that your breeder has carried out the necessary tests in their bloodline and can provide you with the relevant certification.

If you are interested in getting a Boston Terrier pup, you can find details of your local Kennel Club assured breeder on the Kennel Club’s website.
