Looking Forward: Changes, Goals & Motivations in 2014

Happy New Year! We hope you had a fantastic Christmas break and are all set for a cracking 2014. Our Christmas was pretty low key – spending time with loved ones, long walks on the beach, heaps of food, too much drink and plenty of snuggle time with our favourite dog – Basil Barkarama.

2013 wasn't half bad but we're excited to have a fresh new year to sink our teeth into. While we’re not ones for resolutions, we like to shake things up with changes, new goals and motivations so in 2014 we’ll be …

For those who’ve been visiting us for some time, you’ll know that Barkarama is really just me (Alex), Basil the Boston Terrier (the apple of my eye) and very occasionally, the other half when he finds himself dragged along to some sort of doggy soiree.

While Basil has his own column, I don't think we give enough ‘us’ in our blog posts so in 2014, we aim to get you more acquainted with the Barkarama duo. The changes will be gradual as we get into the swing of things so until then get more familiar with Basil and I by visiting our About Barkarama page.

2013 kicked off with Basil’s bucket list of 50 things every dog should do in their lifetime. As the clock struck midnight this New Year’s Eve, I’m proud to report that my clever canine had completed 18 items on his list - I'd missed off 'star in a YouTube video' from our 2013 round up post - see Basil's video debut video on Tilly's Studios Youtube page.

With 32 challenges still to go, Basil will continue with his quest to complete more items on his doggy bucket list and if you think you can help him realise any of them, get in touch at This email address is being protected from spambots. Where Basil is a fantastic dog model, I am a poor photographer and as a blogger, I’m ashamed to admit that the only camera I possess is on my iPhone. Bad, bad, Alex! This year I endeavour to put an end to this creative stumbling block so I shall be loaning my Dad’s SLR while I get my camera confidence, reading my Beautiful Beasties: A Creative Guide to Modern Pet Photography book (gifted on my birthday last May!) and maybe even enroll on a short beginners course (recommendations gratefully received). Hopefully the fruits of my labour will start to filter through on the blog, as we get further into the year.

Acting solo and with Basil in tow, I plan to do at least two lots of activity this year to raise funds for our furry friends and those, who need the assistance of dogs to help them through their daily lives. My plans are still to be confirmed - it’s only the 2nd Jan after all - but I’ve got some ideas floating about and I will be sharing the love between four charities. Watch this space!

What do you make of our goals and motivations? What are your plans for 2014? We’d love to hear all about them, just comment below.

Happy 2014 y'all! Hope it's good to you. Love Alex & Basil x
